It’s not easy choosing cars for your fleet and in some ways there’s never been a more unsettling time to upgrade your vehicles (nor a more exciting one for that matter). Selecting traditional diesel or petrol ICE vehicles during a period when the UK is increasingly promoting and incentivising electric, feels unprogressive and unsupportive of emission reduction efforts. On the other hand, choosing EVs for your fleet for the first time can seem a daunting prospect.
Leasing offers many businesses and their drivers the opportunity to experience electrified driving without the longer term commitment of a purchase, but the EVs you choose will have a considerable impact on how you feel about them, for many years to come. Read on to discover which EVs we think will help you take the leap (and leave you feeling glad you did).
1.Kia EV3
The EV3 may be the brand’s smallest electric car, sitting below the Kia Niro EV, EV6 and EV9 in Kia’s electric line-up, but it can officially travel the furthest of them all - up to 375 miles between charges for the Long Range version.
Fairly soft suspension equates to a comfortable journey both in towns and on motorways and adjustable levels of regenerative braking allow the vehicle to harvest energy while decelerating. There’s a 12.3in digital driver’s display behind the steering wheel, a 5.3in climate-control panel and a 12.3in infotainment touchscreen. Wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay come as standard, as well as rear parking sensors and a rear-view camera. No end of praise has been heaped on this little EV for ticking all of the boxes at a very affordable price.
2.Tesla Model 3
Tesla’s cheapest award-winning electric car offers long range and fast charging. It’s good to drive, offers plenty of tech, and is practical and spacious enough for most of the population, making it one of the most popular electric cars and a top executive car choice. And of course, Tesla drivers get access to Tesla’s national Supercharger network.
There are four versions to choose from and the long range, all-wheel drive trim offers up to 436 miles of range on 18-inch wheels thanks to a 79kWh battery.
3. Hyundai Ioniq 5
A big electric family SUV, the Ioniq 5 gets a place in our ‘top 5’ for the generous quality and quality of standard equipment it offers as well as respectable range, ultra- rapid charge rate and practical interior (with plenty of legroom and a 520-litre boot). You can pick between two battery sizes, rear or four-wheel drive and one of five trims. The larger battery can manage up to 354 miles of range.
Shaped like a hatchback but sized like an SUV, cool design features such as its pixel-style lights give this vehicle a futuristic feel. And when needed, you can top up super fast, with a 10-80% charge of the biggest battery taking just 18 minutes, which is market-leading speed. Performance is good, coupled with secure handling, but if it’s out-and-out fun you’re after then the Ioniq 5 N should tickle your fancy (pictured above).
4. Skoda Elroq
Skoda has been applauded for getting it right with the Elroq, producing an affordable SUV that does exactly what it needs to. Though on the smaller side, practicality has been placed at the forefront of the design, with the Elroq offering enough rear space for a six-footer to sit behind a tall driver with plenty of room still. Plus, the floor’s flat, so there’s plenty of room for three people to sit comfortably in the back. The boot also provides a respectable 470 litres which is a welcome bonus.
Recharge stops are relatively painless as the Elroq has a good peak charging rate, meaning that you can get from 10-80 percent in as little as 28 minutes. It’s not the super- rapid rate of the Ioniq, but it’s nevertheless a rate that doesn’t lag behind the best brands in terms of charge speeds. An official range between charges of 360 miles seals the deal.
5. Kia EV9
A refined yet practical big seven-seater SUV for larger families or drivers frequently accommodating large numbers of passengers, the EV9 has made it into our ‘top 5’ as the best in class for this vehicle type due to its relative affordability and all-round strengths. With a well-appointed, high tech interior and three trim levels, all EV9 models get the same big battery, providing range of up to 349 miles if you choose the long range single-motor model, or 313 miles in the dual-motor version.
The three-screen layout displays driver information and infotainment. There’s also a six-seat configuration option, which enables second-row seats to swivel 180 degrees when the vehicle is stationary; a cool feature that gives this vehicle its own distinct character if you go with this option.
