With more than 34 million full driving licence holders in England in 2023, digital driving licences are being introduced as part of the government objective to simplify access to important services and documents.
What Are Digital Licences?
Digital licences are licences that drivers can access on a new government smartphone app called Gov.uk, which will prove their right to drive.
How Will UK Digital Driving Licences Work?
Drivers will be given the choice of using a physical or digital driving licence.
The digital driving licence will allow drivers to view their driving record, check endorsements, and renew their licence via the app.
How Will Digital Licences be Accessed?
The digital licences are likely to be launched as part of a “wallet” within the app, secured in a similar way to many banking apps using biometrics and multifactor authentication, to only allow the genuine licence owner access.
Where Can Digital Licences be Used?
Digital licences will be used to prove your right to drive and they will also likely be accepted as ID when buying alcohol, boarding domestic flights and voting, among other likely uses.
When Will Digital Licences be Introduced?
The new digital licences will be introduced in 2025, the exact date is yet to be confirmed.
Will Physical Identification be Replaced?
Physical identification is unlikely to be replaced entirely, at least not imminently.
Will the Government App be Used for Anything Else?
The government is understood to be considering integrating other services into it, such as tax payments and benefits claims.
