What is a Manufacturer’s Warranty?

When you get a new car for your fleet, whether purchased from the dealership or leased brand-new from a company like Wessex Fleet, it will come with a manufacturer’s warranty for at least three years. This is effectively the manufacturer’s guarantee that for the duration of the period it applies, they will repair or replace your vehicle if necessary. It is one of the biggest perks of leasing.

What is Covered Under the Warranty?

A manufacturer’s warranty will normally apply to issues caused in the manufacturing of the vehicle, including issues regarding the engine, fuel and ignition systems, cooling systems, electrical systems, gearbox and clutch transmissions, steering and suspension. Excluded issues include aspects that are expected to deteriorate due to the car being driven, like brake pads and tyres, as well as faults and damage caused by driver misuse or accidents.

How Do I Know Exactly What is Included and For How Long?

Each car manufacturer has their own specific terms for their warranty which will be outlined in the terms of your agreement. A few of the most popular brands are listed here in the links below:

Volkswagen

Kia

Peugeot

Land Rover

Honda

Renault

How Long Does a Manufacturer’s Warranty Last?

The length of time a warranty lasts can differ between brands and sometimes even between models from the same manufacturer. However, depending on the length of the lease, almost all warranties will cover your car for the majority of a lease, if not the full term. A three-year new car warranty is standard on four out of every five new cars, and most brands stipulate a mileage limit, usually 60,000 miles.

Should I Extend the Warranty on a Lease car?

If the length of your lease is longer than the warranty duration or mileage specified by the manufacturer, then you can take a look at extending the warranty to cover the entire lease term. You can choose to get the extended warranty from the car manufacturer or a third-party.

Manufacturer’s Warranty Versus Third Party Warranty

You will need to carefully consider which type of warranty you want to use to extend the warranty on your leased fleet vehicles as there are some crucial differences. A manufacturer warranty normally allows you to take your car into the dealership and have your car looked at with no payment necessary whereas a third party warranty will usually require upfront payment for any repairs needed and the cost reimbursed. In addition, third-party warranties normally aren’t as comprehensive in their cover as the original manufacturer’s warranty.
