With rising costs across the business, we know that one area many are looking to save money is on their fleet, and within that maintenance in particular. While regular maintenance and servicing is essential part of keeping your fleet running and costs down you might be looking to reduce costs there, and one thing more companies are turning to is pay as you go maintenance.
What is Pay as You Go Maintenance?
Pay as you go (PAYG) maintenance is exactly what it sounds like, it’s a maintenance plan that you pay for as you use it. The maintenance is still managed by a third party provider, such as Wessex Fleet, so that you continue to benefit from their contacts and the discounts and offers they can get that aren’t available to the general public. Using a maintenance management company will also reduce the time and stress for your employees as they won’t have to arrange the logistics of having servicing, mots, maintenance or repairs work completed.
Benefits of Pay as You Go Fleet Maintenance
The main benefit of having a PAYG maintenance provision rather than just paying when work needs doing is that your maintenance administrator will have access to better prices because of the volume of work they are managing. With PAYG maintenance you’ll also get better transparency on where your money is being spent as you’ll get invoices for work as it is done, rather than a monthly invoice for maintenance services.
Not only does having a PAYG plan with a maintenance provider give you access to their cheaper rates but will also give you access to their established network of reputable garages and suppliers. This can be a great benefit if you have drivers in a number of locations across the UK and not all are near where your fleet team and there contacts are located.
Additionally, a PAYG maintenance package will reduce the burden on your internal fleet management team by reducing their workload. The company will manage and arrange any maintenance, servicing and repairs and have pre-agreed approvals and budgets so they will only need to seek approval from your team before unexpected or expensive work.
Considerations with Pay as You Go Maintenance
If you have an aging fleet, then the costs may be higher for you with a PAYG programme as older vehicles tend to need work more often as parts are more worn.
Another financial consideration is that if you’re leasing some, or all, of your fleet you might find it more economical for those vehicles to include a maintenance package as part of your lease agreement.
We recommend looking at maintenance provisions across your fleet based on individual driver and vehicle needs within a wider overall strategy you have for the business. This may lead to you having a mix of maintained, PAYG maintained and grey fleet vehicles rather than one uniformed approach but this can work out better for your fleet in the long term.
