Two of the largest players in the electric vehicle (EV) and green energy arena have teamed up in order to offer a new electricity traffic exclusively to drivers of EVs.

Zap-Maps is the UK’s leading EV mapping service, showing drivers of fully electric and plug-in hybrids where charging points are across the UK. This is an incredibly useful tool if you’re not at home and need to charge your vehicle or for planning your route on longer journeys.

Good Energy is a renewable energy company that provides 100% renewable electricity and carbon-neutral gas and is committed to helping UK residents become greener in their energy use.

This tariff will offer drivers the opportunity to charge their vehicle for free as it includes flash windows based on when Britain is generating an abundance of solar and wind power.

When one of these flash periods occurs, the tariff will alert drivers to a four-hour window when charging their vehicle will come at no extra cost and backed by Good Energy’s 100% renewable energy supply.

The Zap Flash tariff will let you charge your electric vehicle in an even cheaper and greener way. Drivers taking advantage of this new tariff will also help the National Grid balance supply and demand during periods of increased renewable energy levels in the system.

It will be monitored and enabled by smart meters and Good Energy will be offering a smart EV charger and updated app in order for customers to take advantage of the tariff.

We’ve been advised that it will initially be released in a beta phase in order to allow for product testing and to ensure any issues that consumers encounter or questions they raise are dealt with before the tariff is available on a wider scale.

Because the flash period is based on when there is an excess of renewable energy available the day that it is available will vary. However, during the summer or winter period, the hours will remain the same. So, from April to September the hours will be between 11 am and 3 pm and from October to March it will be between 11 pm and 3 am.

Customers will have at least 24 hours’ notice of any flash period so that they are able to take advantage of it.

This tariff is exciting news in the world of green energy as it combines the greener mode of transport in electric vehicles with renewable energy for the first time.
